Using Smart Plug to Create Smart Home Easily

Let's explore together here on how to use smart plug to create a smart home easily. Some people might refer it to smart switch or smart outlet but they are talking about same thing. This plug is now commonly used at home to create a basic smart home and will become even more powerful if you use it against smart devices.

What is smart plug? Essentially it's a plug that lets you turn on and off any electronic devices (even those non-smart or dumb devices) that plugs into a standard wall socket. Non smart devices we refer them to those legacy electronic devices that cannot be controlled or managed remotely over WiFi or even Internet. In other words you always need physical touch to control them.

In terms on how to use it, it's easy! You just need to plug it into any wall socket, then plug your chosen electronic device (light, heater, coffee machine, security camera, TV, etc.) into it, after which go ahead to perform initial setup by connecting it to WiFi network, install the app on your mobile device (iOS or Android mobile device) and perform further configuration, finally you can use it to turn on of off the plugged-in electronic device remotely.

You can also set the schedule to turn on and off the plugged-in electronic devices automatically so that to ease you life and save power.

If it's supported, you can pair the smart plug with the Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Apple Siri, Google Home, Google Assistant or other virtual assistants to enable hands-free voice control over your devices.

In case you would like to save few bucks, consider to get the one with energy monitoring feature to monitor the power usage of the plugged-in electronic device. Potential data you could get are device on duration, average device on time, power usage of device, etc.

From my understanding, some smart plugs even come with the ability to randomize your lights where it protects your home better than a mechanical timer. When set to “Away Mode,” the smart plug will turn plugged-in lights on and off randomly to make it appear like you’re home even when you’re not.
